About Jerry
Jerry used to get annoyed when his family physician performed regular blood tests, but thanks to these thorough labs, he was diagnosed early with multiple myeloma. At first, Jerry was not sure he even wanted to think about the disease, but then the teacher in him took over. As his students were hitting the books, Jerry was doing some research of his own. The more he learned about his disease, the more he wanted to reach out and meet others in the multiple myeloma community— and his wish finally came true.
- Lives in Virginia
- Born in 1945
- Helped found the Southeastern Virginia Multiple Myeloma Support Group
- Retired teacher and Navy officer with 33 years of service
While researching multiple myeloma, Jerry came across the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) Web site where he learned about an upcoming seminar. Inspired by the supportive camaraderie at the seminar, Jerry asked excitedly if he could join a support group near his home. When he learned there were no local support groups, he channeled his energy into starting his own and cofounded the Southeastern Virginia Multiple Myeloma Support Group.
Today, Jerry continues to do well in managing his disease. He sees each day as an opportunity to reach out to others who need help. He knows firsthand how tough it is to live with multiple myeloma, so he works to create a supportive, caring atmosphere for individuals and caregivers struggling with the disease. As a Millennium Multiple Myeloma Ambassador, he hopes to continue doing just that.
